Van Heusen apparel is part of the Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation (PVH Corp), which got its start way back in 1876 when shoemaker George H. Bass purchased a share of another shoe manufacturer in Maine, changing the name to G.H. Bass & Co. in 1879.

The company evolved and added other companies many times over the years (more on that in a moment), eventually introducing the revolutionary Van Heusen “soft folding collar” in the 1920s.

Bigger changes were still to come before the Van Heusen apparel company achieved the popular status that is now enjoys.

The Van Heusen Apparel and PVH Corp. Timeline

  • 1881: Moses and Endel Phillips begin hand sewing and selling shirts to Pottsville, PA coal miners.
  • 1919: Van Heusen is granted he patent for the aforementioned “soft-folding collar” – ubiquitous today in polo and other sports shirts.
  • 1936: Bass Weejuns are introduced.
  • 1950: Van Heusen hires celebrities such as Ronald Regan, Mickey Rooney and Charlton Heston to promote Van Heusen shirts.
  • 1987: PVH buys G. H. Bass & Co.
  • 1991: Van Heusen becomes the number one selling brand of men’s dress shirts.
  • 2010: PVH Corp now owns the following additional clothing lines:
