The Different Types of Uniform
There are a wide variety of United States Marines Uniforms that are needed by our country’s defenders. Each type of apparel must have the same kind of quality that we expect from our nation’s finest.
Dress Uniform
A dress uniform is worn for ceremonies and other formal occasions. The United States Marines Uniforms listed below are all used for the many functions that a member will attend during their service.
Blue Dress
The Marines most recognizable dress that functions like a civilian’s “black tie” apparel.
- Dress “A” – Consists of a long-sleeved midnight blue coat, a peaked cap, plain white shirt, sky blue trousers, white gloves, and black dress shoes and socks.
- Dress “B” – Similar to Dress “A”, only ribbons are kept on the left side of the chest.
- Dress “C” – Similar to Dress “B”, however a long sleeve khaki shirt and tie are in place of the outer blue coat and white gloves.
- Dress “D” – Identical to “Dress “C” except a short sleeve khaki shirt is worn with no tie.
Blue-White Dress
This is the authorized summer wear for all officers.
- Dress “A” – Similar to the Blue Dress “A”, this uniform consists white trousers instead of blue ones.
- Dress “B” – Just like the Blue Dress “B” only white pants are substituted for the blue ones.
Evening Dress
The most formal of the many types of United States Marines Uniforms worn by officers.
- Dress “A” – Different outfits are worn by males and females. Females wear a mess jacket, a white shirt, a skirt nearly reaching their ankles, and a red cummerbund. Males wear an evening coat, white waistcoat, a shirt with a placket, and midnight blue trousers.
- Dress “B” – Similar to Evening Dress “A” with the exception that men wear a scarlet waistcoat, and women may wear a short skirt.
Red Dress
This apparel is worn by the members of the United States Marine Band and the United States Marine Drum and Bugles Corp. It features a scarlet top, instead of the traditional blue.
Service Uniform
The service uniform functions like a business suit and consists of green and khaki pieces of apparel.
- Service “A” – This uniform is made up of a green coat, green trousers (or skirt for females), a khaki belt, long-sleeve shirt, tie, and black shoes.
- Service “B” – Similar to service “B” with exception that a coat is not worn.
- Service “C” – Similar to service “C” only a short-sleeve shirt is in place of the long-sleeve one.
Physical Training Uniform
A Marine’s physical training uniform, or PTU, needs to withstand the rigors of their daily exercise routines.
The uniform consists of either green nylon shorts and t-shirt or green sweatpants and a sweatshirt with the Marine logo on the left thigh and chest.
