Under Armour® Grew Quickly Just by Word of Mouth
Under Armour® got its start in 1996 when former University of Maryland football special teams captain, Kevin Plank, became fed up with the sweat-soaked t-shirts he wore under his football jersey. He started looking into making team uniforms , polos and other clothing items with moisture-wicking fabric – all the better for athletic performance.
Plank’s business (which he started in his grandmother’s basement) grew to $17K in revenue the very first year he started selling, just by word of mouth, according to Wikipedia.org.
The very next year (1997) he had the “happy problem” of needing to fill $100K in orders. Business really took off when Oakland Raiders quarterback Jeff George was pictured on the cover of USA Today wearing one of an Under Armour® shirt.
